“I believe it is very important to give back not only to the community, but to the environment,” said Dr. Nottingham. “I have many of Wyland’s paintings and love what he stands for.”

Inspired by the work of Jacques Cousteau, Wyland began painting the underwater realm in the early 1970s, hoping people would respond to his work’s message of environmental responsibility.

Today, he is the world’s most widely collected marine life artist, internationally renowned as a pioneer of the environmental art movement. An estimated one billion people view his artwork each year — particularly the mommoth Whaling Wall murals he paints to promote the preservation of the oceans and their creatures.

His art captures whales, dolphins, sea turtles, manatees and reef life in their natural habitat, alive with spirit and grace. Wyland’s paintings and sculptures are known for their vivid coloraboration, true-to-life detail, and the soul that shines through the eyes of each marine creature portrayed the eyes of each marine create portrayed. A passionate diver, he spends innumerable hours each year swimming with aquatic inhabitants, drawing inspiration that fuels both his art and his life.

The City of North Lauderdale dedicates this mural on June 14th, 2008, as a reminder of the wonders of nature and the need to preserve them for future generations. The mural on Wyland Walk was created by the world famous artist Wyland, whose monumental Whaling Wall project is a series of 100 life-size marine life murals that span twelve countries on four continents. This wall is the 99th mural created out of 100.

Smile South Florida Cosmetic Dentistry has joined forces with Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options, Inc. (JAFCO) to provide complementary dental care for the foster children. The dentists also will take care of any dental emergencies that may arise.

JAFCO provides foster care and rehabilitation for at-risk children in South Florida. JAFCO Executive Director Sarah Franco said they were thrilled with Smile South Florida’s offer. “We’ll use (their services) to treat children who come to our emergency shelter directly after being separated from their parents. I know the children will be grateful, just as JAFCO is very, very grateful.”

Dr. Nottingham began talking about what a dentist does and what equipment a dentist uses. The doctor explained that he has to wear gloves, a mask, and a coat in order to protect the patient and himself from germs. The children loved Dr. Nottingham’s magnifying glasses and thought the glasses looked funny. Dr. Nottingham exclaimed that the glasses were necessary to see very close up.

Then, Dr. Nottingham showed a video and strongly insisted that it was important that everyone brush their teeth. The doctor showed pictures of patients with plaque and the large cavities that resulted from not brushing one’s teeth. Dr. Nottingham asserted that children and adults should not eat sweets because bacteria feed off the sugar.

Towards the conclusion of the session, Dr. Nottingham showed Spunky the Donkey’s teeth and warned that Spunky lost some teeth because he did not brush enough. One of the children showed an ugly picture of one of Dr. Nottingham’s patients, displaying what happens when you don’t brush your teeth. The children loved this hideous picture.

Dr. Nottingham discussed with the children the process of losing baby teeth and getting adult teeth. The children learned that there are only 20 baby teeth and that eventually they should get 32 adult teeth (including four wisdom teeth). The class concluded with everyone counting Spunky the Donkey’s teeth. Remember, Spunky only had 30 teeth because he lost two from not brushing and flossing daily.
